New Football Programme to Remove All Barriers for Girls in Cambodia

A new football programme for girls has been launched in Cambodia.

The Girls Onside Football Cambodia (GOFC) was officially unveiled in a ceremony at Raintree Cambodia a few days ago.

GOFC has been established as a community-based organisation consisting of professionals within the football industry, business and NGO leaders and interested citizens both from the local and expat communities. It aims to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders who have similar aim and want to inspire demand for girl’s football.

GOFC’s organisational members include Svay Rieng FC, Phnom Penh Crown FC, KMH Foundation of ISI Group, Riel Phnom Penh Srey, Happy Football Cambodia Australia (HFCA) and Football for Life.

With the help of sponsors Urban Living Solutions (ULS) and ABA, GOFC will set up girls-only soccer camps in Phnom Penh, in addition to its own weekly training sessions.

GOFC aims to be as accessible as possible. Due to finance as a barrier to girls’ access to football, costs will be kept low. The camps and training are free for all girls aged 6 to12-years-old as a starting point.

This model will be expanded to other clubs and provinces in the future, according to Paraic Grogan, Founder of HFCA.

The HFCA, an NGO serving Cambodia’s underprivileged sector, will be selecting 10 girls for the programme.

“GOFC aims to remove all barriers for young girls in Cambodia who want to get involved in football by offering a large-scale introduction to football that will become the foundation for the next generation of women’s sport,” Grogan said.

“GOFC has the potential to be a game changer in female participation in football in Cambodia and HFCA are proud to be a founding partner,” he added.

In his message, Boros said parents should encourage their daughters to join the programme.
