Southampton Launches Search For Female Football Coaching Stars

Southampton Football Club has launched its Coaches of Tomorrow programme for 2023/24 season, an ambitious project aims to discover the future female stars of football coaching.

The programme, in partnership with Starling Bank, celebrates the continued rise in popularity of women’s football. The club is eager to build on this momentum through its 15-week visionary programme, aiming to empower and inspire a new generation of women and girls to conquer the realm of football coaching.

Last year 20 women in Hampshire trained and qualified as grassroots football coaches in a move that is hoped will continue to help break down the barriers of inclusivity within the sport.

Rebecca Nichols was one of the first Coaches of Tomorrow graduates. She now coaches her local club Whiteley Wanderers and is enjoying a funded place on England Football Learning’s UEFA C course.

Discussing the impact of the Coaches of Tomorrow initiative, she said, “The Coaches of Tomorrow programme is perfect for anyone who has a passion for football. It’s a steep learning curve but I found the webinars and in-person sessions had a really supportive environment that helped me thrive.

“The programme set me on a path that I’d never even remotely considered a year ago. I’m now coaching a girls’ team and I’m able to support more girls get into football and explore their passion for sport.”

Coaches of Tomorrow participants will be supported through the EE Playmaker Course, a funded place on the England Football Learning Introduction to Coaching course. These comprehensive training and mentoring opportunities will ensure aspiring female coaches are equipped with the skills and knowledge to excel in the world of football.

Charlie Boss, Chief Commercial Officer at Southampton FC, said: “We are on the lookout for this season’s Coaches of Tomorrow, as we hope to unearth the future stars of female football coaching.

“The success of our Women’s team just shows the potential, and we are committed to nurturing talent from within. We believe that diversity and inclusion are essential for the sport’s growth and development, and this initiative aligns perfectly with our vision.”
