Come to think of it, how does Messi slug it out with big and strong looking giants like Pepper or Van Djik with his petit body structure. It's not about body building , it's about building the right weight needed to compete favorably in the game. 


The question is, do you want to be a rock, solid and immovable or do you want to be like Ronaldo? 


Lifting weights, will build too much muscle and slow you down in the gym’ 

This is something players ask us about all the time, in fact Paul messaged this yesterday:

"Should I invest my time in bodybuilding, I am a defender..."  In some ways this is a valid question.., 


Well, the most important thing is to assess how you gained the increase in muscle, rather than how much muscle you have.


There is a huge difference between training to build muscle (bodybuilding) and training to improve performance (which can also result in increased muscle size).


You see…

Bodybuilding workouts are designed to mainly work on slow twitch muscle fibres through a process called hypertrophy. These muscles are more for fashion than function.


However..

Workouts specific for football, are designed to mainly work on fast twitch muscle fibres and aim to improve power, strength and speed. Resulting in muscles which are more function over fashion. So your goal in your training should be to increase speed, agility power and strength and aim for a body fat of 8-12%.


Always keep this in mind before planning any individual workout program and you will definitely be on the path to success.
