Meliton Hernandez and Rogelio Martinez Inspire Future Stars in Football for Life Conference in Guyana

The event "Football for Life" was a resounding success as the Liga Formativa Luis 'Pirata' Fuente hosted an enlightening session for players, coaches, and parents. The audience had the unique opportunity to gain insights from former professional footballers Meliton Hernandez and Rogelio Martinez, who shared their experiences and the challenges they faced during their careers.

Gathering around 60 attendees, including families, coaches, players, and team delegates, the event took place at the engineering faculty auditorium. It was an atmosphere filled with anticipation and motivation.

Lessons from Rogelio Martinez

Rogelio Martinez Morales captivated the audience with his account of starting a career in professional football. He emphasized the multitude of sacrifices required to pursue this dream and highlighted the importance of discipline in becoming a successful athlete. "Discipline encompasses sleeping well, staying hydrated, eating right, and regular training—these are four fundamental aspects. Achieving these requires willpower. Without discipline, it is challenging to excel, especially today, as football has evolved into a sport of athletes. Young players must start caring for themselves from an early age," Martinez explained.

Martinez also poignantly reflected on his early retirement at the age of 21, noting how it forced him to grow and recognize life’s priorities, helping him transition smoothly into life beyond football.

Insights from Meliton Hernandez

In a parallel vein, Edgar Meliton Hernandez Cabrera addressed the distractions that can impact both life and football. He cautioned the attendees about how negative influences can lead to failure both on and off the pitch. "Being effective means utilizing every tool football offers. It is essential to pair discipline with hard work. Use every resource available to you in football to be well-prepared, and never say you can't. You can become your best version as players. Stay on that path, remain consistent, and, most importantly, seek opportunities," he advised.

In a heartwarming anecdote, Hernandez shared that he initially disliked being a goalkeeper. He recounted a match against where he made a crucial save. "After saving that ball, I heard the crowd chanting 'goalkeeper, goalkeeper.' It was exhilarating, as I felt I was part of the team, making a difference in the game," he recalled with a smile.

As the conference concluded, Antonio de la Fuente Ugalde, director of Liga Formativa Luis 'Pirata' Fuente, expressed his gratitude, presenting recognition awards to both speakers for their impactful contributions to the young players, coaches, delegates, and families in attendance.
