MLS team, SJ Earthquakes Sign Maradona's Nephew for A Club Record Fee $6 million

The San Jose Earthquakes have smashed their club-record transfer fee to sign Hernan Lopez from Godoy Cruz before the end of the MLS transfer window.

The Western Conference side forked out over $6m for the 23-year-old attacker, a club-record fee, doubling the previous $3m they paid for Ecuadorian Carlos Gruezo. The Argentine has signed a deal through 2026, with option years to extend in 2027 and 2028 as a Designated Player.

San Jose sits at the bottom of MLS heading into matchday 11, with a mere three points. They're 1-0-8 (WDL) through nine games this season and have the worst goal-differential in the league at -11. However, with Lopez in the mix now, their fortunes could change.

The Argentine had seven goals and five assists in his two years with Godoy Cruz. The numbers might not be flashy, but as the nephew of Argentine great Diego Maradona, there will be high expectations for him in Southern California.

Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch said: “We’re excited to announce the signing of a top-level player like Hernán López and welcome him to San Jose. To bring in a dynamic central playmaker of his caliber for what will be the prime of his career demonstrates that we are willing to invest at a higher level than ever before. He not only fits the mold for our long-term project but will make an immediate impact when he steps on the field.”

The Earthquakes will look to return to winning ways against Nashville SC Saturday. Both sides are actively struggling, three points could be crucial to them turning their season around, while Lopez will look to make his debut as soon as possible. It's not yet known if his paperwork will be completed in time to feature against Gary Smith's side on Saturday.
